Philly Acts of Science

In 2026, join thousands of Philadelphians celebrating our nation’s 250th birthday by taking part in simple Acts of Science that protect wildlife, explore our night sky, and strengthen our city.

Throughout April 2026—Citizen Science Month—and the 2026 migration season, you can:

Look through telescopes and binoculars stationed across the city to observe constellations and measure light pollution.

Decorate your windows with bird-safe, 250th-anniversary decals featuring the Eagles, 76ers, Phillies, PHL250 logo, the American flag, and a red-white-blue birthday cake—helping prevent bird collisions while celebrating our city and country.

Philadelphia was the birthplace of America. In 2026, it becomes the birthplace of 2.50 million Acts of Science.

Join in. Make a difference. Celebrate together.

Explore the Night Sky Across Philadelphia

In April 2026, volunteers from The Franklin Institute, NASA’s Night Sky Network, Dark Sky Network, Globe at Night, and Lights Out Philly will host stargazing stations throughout the city. Philadelphians can look through telescopes or binoculars, learn to identify constellations, and help measure light pollution.

Projects You Can Do Anywhere in Philly

Report light pollution levels with Globe at Night

Track nighttime bird migration patterns

Identify stars and constellations with easy apps

Contribute data to national research efforts on energy use, wildlife behavior, and sky quality

Your observations help scientists understand how city lights affect human health, wildlife, energy waste, and our ability to see the night sky.

Celebrate America’s 250th—and Protect Birds

Every Philadelphia household will receive a sheet of commemorative 2026 Bird-Safe Window Decals designed in partnership with:

Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia 76ers

Philadelphia Phillies

PHL250

Lights Out Philly

SciStarter

City of Philadelphia

Academy of Natural Sciences

Franklin Institute

BirdingPhilly

Philadelphia Education Fund

What’s on the Decals

Each sheet includes a mix of celebratory and bird-safe designs:

Eagles, 76ers, and Phillies logos

American flag stars & stripes

A red-white-blue birthday cake

Festive shapes that break up reflections AND decorate the city

Educational messages on the reverse side

Why Use Them?

Birds mistake reflections for open sky—especially during migration

Most fatal window strikes happen at homes and low-rise buildings

Decals dramatically reduce collisions and save countless lives

Display them March–November 2026 during peak migration

Where to Get Them

Decals will be distributed through:

Philadelphia250 Block Party Kits

Recreation centers & libraries

Visitors Center

National Park Service sites

Science museums & STEM partners

Schools and community organizations

This citywide initiative is powered by a broad coalition of science, education, community, and cultural organizations:
