Join us for a unique national moment as Philadelphia hosts a Citizen Science Star Party at Independence National Historical Park near the Liberty Bell on April 13 at 8:00 PM (rain date April 14), launching International Dark Sky Week. This event contributes to a nationwide goal of 2.50 million Acts of Science during Citizen Science Month.
Amateur Astronomers Needed!
Amateur astronomers and clubs will play a central role in inspiring the public and advancing real scientific research!
Why Participate
Be part of a historic event in one of the most iconic locations in the United States. Set up your telescope near the Liberty Bell and engage a large public audience. The event will be cohosted by Derrick Pitts and Darlene Cavalier.
Grow your community by promoting your club, connecting with new audiences, and showcasing your outreach experience in a high visibility setting.
Contribute to real science by helping participants measure light pollution through Globe at Night, track migrating birds using tools from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and learn ways to protect dark skies and wildlife.
What You Will Receive
- A $150 stipend for up to ten telescope hosts.
- Opportunity for two participants to receive a Dark Sky Meter after the event.
- Red light flashlight suitable for astronomy and night observation.

- Take home guides and flyers to incorporate citizen science into your own events.
- Promotion of your club and activities through event outreach.

Expectations
- Before the event: Attend a short webinar on April 3 at 3PM to review logistics and expectations. Register here.
- Bring your own telescope and equipment.
- Set up, operate, and manage your station safely.
- Engage with the public by pointing out celestial objects and sharing your knowledge.
- Remove all equipment at the end of the event.

Location: Independence National Historical Park near the Liberty Bell.
Time: April 13 at 8:00 PM. Rain date April 14.
Recommended parking: Bourse Parking Garage, 44 South 4th Street, Philadelphia.
On site support includes coordination staff, designated setup areas, and public engagement assistance.
