As we close out 2021, SciStarter is looking back on our successes this year and, as always, the biggest thanks goes out to you, the citizen scientists! Our more than 100,000 members made millions of contributions to citizen science projects this year, giving scientists data they never would have had otherwise.

This year, citizen scientists continued to accelerate research into Alzheimer’s with Stall Catchers, sampled their neighborhood water quality with Crowd the Tap, tackled light pollution with Globe at Night, helped research the design of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine and much more! SciStarter added 399 new projects and events this year, and logged more than 2.5 million contributions to Affiliate projects.

Other highlights included our annual Citizen Science Month celebration in April. More than 10,000 people tuned in to over 250 live-streamed events throughout the month, and we saw a staggering 350,000 contributions to projects in the month of April alone! In May, SciStarter also hosted the first-ever CitSciCon, which featured more than a dozen NASA citizen science projects. Attendees were able to join live sessions with NASA scientists to ask questions, learn about science and more.

Here’s a few of our top projects from 2021. It’s a broad list — a testament to the diverse interests and relentless curiosity of citizen scientists! You can also find the Top 21 most viewed projects of 2021 in the Project Finder.

We’re already excited for what 2022 will bring for citizen science. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for the latest news, and sign up for our bi-weekly newsletter to learn about fun new projects.

Thanks to everyone, and best wishes to all!
