Program Description
Celebrate Citizen Science Month by bringing your community together to participate in real scientific research, live!
Acts of Science: Connected is a series of live, interactive virtual events hosted by SciStarter every April. Each event spotlights one citizen science project and connects participants with the scientists behind the research.
Your library provides the gathering space and livestreams the event on Zoom. SciStarter and the featured project team will guide everyone through the activity, answer questions, and explain how participants’ contributions support real research. Instead of just learning about citizen science, everyone gets to do it together!
Choose one Acts of Science: Connected event or host several throughout April. No prior science experience is needed.
Prep & Flow based on a 2 hour event
Prep:
5 min – Explore the Acts of Science: Connected event lineup and choose the event you’d like to host.
10 min – Register for the Zoom event and add your local gathering to SciStarter.
10 min – Review the event toolkit for your selected event and familiarize yourself with the featured citizen science project.
10 min – Prepare your space with a large screen or projector, speakers, stable internet, and a computer connected to Zoom. Make sure participants will have access to an internet-connected device or let them know to bring one.
Event Flow:
15 min – Welcome & Orientation: Welcome participants, introduce Citizen Science Month, and get everyone ready to participate.
30 min – Meet the Scientist: Meet the scientist or project leader behind the featured research.
30 min – Learn How to Participate: Follow along as the project team demonstrates the citizen science activity and answers questions.
30 min – All Hands on Deck: Participate together! Everyone contributes to the featured project while the scientists and SciStarter team share updates, answer questions, and highlight the collective impact happening in real time.
15 min – Wrap Up: Hear how participants’ contributions will be used and learn how to continue participating after the event.
